SDCC 2013: 20th Century Boys Chalks Up 2nd Eisners Win

On Saturday, at the 25th annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards ceremony at San Diego Comic-Con 2013Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys (published by VIZ Media) took home the prize in the de-facto manga category, Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia. This win marks a two-fer for Urasawa, who also won an Eisner Award in this category for 20th Century Boys in 2011.

2oth Century Boys is a 22 volume action/drama series about a group of friends who discover that years after their childhood misadventures, one of them has become a cult leader who is out to destroy the world. The final volume of 20th Century Boys was published in September 2012, followed by a 2-volume sequel, 21st Century Boys, that was published in early 2013, which concluded the story. The series was also adapted into a live-action movie trilogy, which was released in N. America by New People Entertainment.

2oth Century Boys was up against a pretty strong slate of competitors in this category this year, including new books by manga legends Osamu Tezuka and Shigeru Mizuki. Here are the other noteworthy manga nominees from this year’s Eisner Awards:

Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia

Other notable winners from this year’s Eisner Awards include two alums from TokyoPop’s “original manga” days, Brandon Graham (who won in the Best Graphic Album—Reprint category for King City, a former TokyoPop title now available from Image) and Becky Cloonan, who won in the Best Single Issue (or One-Shot) category for her fantasy/horror short story, The Mire (which is available as both a printed mini-comic via Lounak Distribution, and digitally via ComiXology).
